I’ve never traveled very far for engagement sessions; couples usually come to me to have them done, but last weekend found me in NYC doing just that. I have two couples whose weddings I’ll be photographing this summer who live in the tri-state area, so I hopped a quick flight down from Portland to have their e-shoots. March is a slow time of year for me, so going to New York City for a couple of days was a welcome diversion. Early spring is an iffy time in the East, and unfortunately, Mother Nature didn’t get the memo about my trip. The plan was to shoot Alaina and Mike’s photos on Friday, and Jenna and Matt’s on Saturday, but as they say, the best laid plans oft go astray.
Friday was a total loss in the weather department; it was a gray day of snow, sleet, rain, wind, and slush. Snow can be pretty to shoot in, rain can be dreamy and romantic, but a driving sleet with three inches of slush on the sidewalks is just gross. Alaina and Mike were however upbeat and positive, and wanted to soldier on. Alaina even went all the way to MOMA to pick up the bright rainbow striped umbrella featured in many of the photos below. She had spied a similar umbrella in a tourist’s bag on the subway the day before and just had to have it for our shoot given the forecast. Luckily, these two are huge New York Rangers fans, and being season ticket holders they were able to get us access to the ice at Madison Square Garden (which is thankfully inside!) It was amazing to be out on center ice in such a huge empty arena. We even got to wear spikes on our shoes so that we didn’t wipe out on the ice. Fun! After Madison Square Garden we tried shooting in Union Square, a place near and dear to Mike and Alaina, but the weather would just not cooperate, so we put off the rest of the shoot until Saturday morning. Early Saturday, I ventured out to Queens to finish up our session, and as can be seen in many photos below, the weather was perfect! Whew! Plus, going to Queens meant that was had the best photo prop at our disposal, their adorable English bulldog, Rugby!
Thanks for being such great sports Alaina and Mike, see you in July!
