Maggie and Mike’s Peaks Island, TEIA wedding

Maggie and Mike’s wedding was held at the Trefethen Evergreen Improvement Association (TEIA) club grounds on Peaks Island this past Saturday. TEIA is so classically Maine in every way, I just love shooting there. Maggie and Mike chose to hold their ceremony on the dock, and guests were able to view it from two levels of the old clubhouse. The view of the ceremony, with Casco Bay, the islands and Portland in the distance couldn’t have gotten any more perfect.

Their wedding had a relaxed, beachy feel, and Maggie was one of the most laid-back brides that I have ever worked with. She exuded calm, and made sure to enjoy the wedding day that she had planned so long for. The beach cruiser bikes were a gift from Maggie’s sister, and bravely Maggie and Mike hopped on (even in their wedding day finery) for a short sunset ride. These two were so determined to live it up on their wedding day that they held nothing back. I just love it when couples have this sort of attitude.

Even though there is a touch of autumn in the air now, Saturday was steamy and warm; their guests gathered for hours on the wide covered porch of the club socializing and enjoying the sea-breeze and sunset. Once the sun finally went down over the bay, the music picked up and the dancing commenced.  What a night!

Thanks for sharing your wedding day with me Maggie and Mike, both Leslie and I enjoyed being there to capture every moment of it!

Cortland and Caulder – two sweet little boys

I don’t shoot a lot of family portraits, but I love them when I do, I mean how could you not love these two cuties?

I originally met Cortland and Caulder at Liz and Jeff’s wedding in July, and it was great to see their smiling faces again at their shoot in New Castle, New Hampshire.  For their session we started by getting to know each other back at their home, then we hit the beach for some fun in the sand, which was then followed up by the boys indulging in some of the biggest lollipops I’d ever seen! A great evening was had by all, I hope it shows in the photos!

Maggie Shanahan - I know you just did my wedding but can you shoot my kids next?! When I have them…September 8, 2011 – 6:52 pm

Sarah and Chris’s Kittery, Maine engagement shoot

After looking at these photos you won’t probably be surprised to find out that Sarah and Chris will be celebrating their wedding next year in Newport, Rhode Island. For those not from the east, Newport is known as the sailing capitol of the United States.  Chris and Sarah love to sail, and so for their e-shoot we took their boat ‘Whomper’ out for a little trip around Kittery Point. It was an amazingly fun time, and I really loved that their shoot was truly what they wanted, and that it reflected what they love to do together. Besides that they both look like they just stepped off the pages of a J.Crew catalog, don’t they?

After our little sail, we took their Boston Whaler over to Portsmouth to stroll around and take some more traditional, land-based photos. It was such a beautiful evening, both on the water and in town, I didn’t want it to end. Thanks to Chris and Sarah for a fun and unique shoot!

Laurie Heintz - Chris and Sarah. Awesomely beautiful pictures! Again, our congratulations to you and look forward to seeing you more and more. Russ and Laurie heintzSeptember 11, 2011 – 11:24 am

Kelly and Mike’s Peaks Island, Harbor View wedding

If you’re sensing a theme with my weddings lately you would be correct that the theme is: Peaks Island. In fact I’ll be out on Peaks again this Saturday! Good thing I love island weddings and the adventure that comes with them. Thankfully, Kelly and Mike’s wedding did NOT come with the added adventure of hurricane Irene! The ferries to Peaks didn’t even run all day on Sunday, so a Sunday wedding on Peaks would have been nearly impossible. We actually lucked out on the weather; no one would have known what the next day held based on Saturday’s weather since it was a beautiful (albeit a bit foggy to start) day.

All day I kept repeating how lucky Kelly and Mike were to have avoided the hurricane by just a day, while at the same time I just felt so sorry for the couples in the mid-Atlantic who had their wedding plans spoiled by the storm. Most weddings have a  ’Plan B’, but seldom do they take into account a natural disaster. After this I hear a lot of couples are looking into wedding insurance, which sounds like a pretty good idea for those getting married during hurricane season.

As you can see, Kelly and Mike are pretty darned adorable, and their wedding was a sweet, intimate celebration which surrounded them with such love. Just look at the photo of their friends encircling them after their first dance, you could feel the love in the room. After their first dance the dance floor practically exploded from the energy of everyone dancing, Kelly and Mike’s friends were some of the wildest dancers I’ve ever seen at a wedding, and it was so much fun!

Thanks for sharing your day with me Kelly and Mike, have a relaxing time in Greece!

Christina and Marc’s Casco Bay wedding, and Peaks Island reception

I have to admit that over the years I’ve shot a lot of weddings, and yet Christina and Marc’s wedding had a first – their ceremony was on a boat! The boat was the Casco Bay Lines ‘Bay Mist’, and it was a fun change of pace. I’ve shot receptions on boats, rehearsal dinners on boats, wedding parties on boats, but never do I recall a ceremony on a boat.

After their ceremony, which was officiated by Marc’s cousin, guests were treated to a lovely Casco Bay harbor cruise, yummy hors d’oeuvres by The Black Tie Co., and cocktails. An hour or so later we docked at Peaks Island for an intimate dinner at Harbor View. We lucked out with a perfect day to be on the water, and we were graced with another amazing sunset. I have only five weddings to go in the season, and three of them are on Peaks Island, I can only hope that we’re just as fortunate with the weather for those weddings as well.

All in all it was the wedding day that Marc and Christina came all the way from California to have!  Congrats you two, have a blast in Iceland!

Christina and Marc’s Portland, Maine engagement shoot

Truth be told Christina and Marc are getting married on Saturday, yes tomorrow! So, I’ll call their shoot a ‘wedding warm-up shoot’ rather than an engagement shoot. Sometimes this is the case when my couples live on the ‘other’ coast, but in my opinion, an engagement shoot done just a day or two before a wedding is just as important as one done a year in advance. The goal of the engagement shoot is to learn a bit about my couples, to help them become more comfortable in front of the camera, and to set up expectations for the  big day. Hopefully we accomplished that and more yesterday with Christina and Marc!
