Jen and Dan’s Portland, Maine engagement shoot

Jen and Dan are from Minnesota and Maine respectively. Just like me, and my husband. They’ll be getting married here in Maine, on September 7th, just like me and my husband did (11 years ago!). Clearly this is  a couple with good, no great taste!!

Like a lot of my wedding clients, Jen and Dan don’t live here in Maine, so last Friday was the first chance we  had met in person. This is why engagement shoots are so important; good ol’ fashioned getting to know you time. We hit the quiet streets of early-spring Portland for some fun and photos, while stopping at the iconic spots along the way. Such a sweet and fun couple. I’m sure their wedding out on Peaks Island will be a blast, plus, I can’t wait to ‘speak Minnesotan’ again! Oh ja, you betcha!

See you two in September!

Calhan turned 1!

Our son, Calhan turned 1 on Friday, what a year it has been! Before having him I hadn’t shot too many baby photos, now it’s one of my favorite things to photograph. I’m lucky I have such a sweet and willing model!

Jenna and Matt’s New York City Engagement Shoot

Saturday’s New York City engagement session for Jenna and Matt started off near the boat house in Central Park. The weather was sunny and warm, thankfully the complete opposite of the day before! I don’t think there was a single Mannhattanite inside that day, everyone was out soaking up the sun, it finally felt like spring after a really long winter. I even saw a few tiny crocuses poking up through the soil. This is the day I was hoping for when I booked my trip to NYC.

Despite the fact that I worked in the city for almost two years, I rarely ventured too far into the park, it was always work, work, work. Since I never got a chance to explore Central Park very thoroughly, tromping around the paths and thoroughfares with Jenna and Matt on Saturday was a fun adventure. We even managed to find a few cool spots that weren’t totally overrun with tourists, dogs walkers, and sun-worshipers.

These two were guests at Katherine and Greg’s wedding in Boston last year, and it was so great to see their smiling faces again. I think that a lot of the folks hanging out in the park thought that they were models on a photo shoot, since they’re just so adorable together.

After we finished up shooting in Central Park, we scooted downtown to Lower Manhattan to shoot along the river front. It had a totally different vibe, and we made some cool, funky shots. Shooting in New York really ended up being a great experience for me, and a really nice change of pace from Maine.

Jenna and Matt’s wedding is going to be in Newport, Rhode Island in June, which is just around the corner. Can’t wait!

Alaina and Mike’s New York City, and Queens Engagement Shoot

I’ve never traveled very far for engagement sessions; couples usually come to me to have them done, but last weekend found me in NYC doing just that.  I have two couples whose weddings I’ll be photographing this summer who live in the tri-state area, so I hopped a quick flight down from Portland to have their e-shoots. March is a slow time of year for me, so going to New York City for a couple of days was a welcome diversion. Early spring is an iffy time in the East, and unfortunately, Mother Nature didn’t get the memo about my trip. The plan was to shoot Alaina and Mike’s photos on Friday, and Jenna and Matt’s on Saturday, but as they say, the best laid plans oft go astray.

Friday was a total loss in the weather department; it was a gray day of snow, sleet, rain, wind, and slush. Snow can be pretty to shoot in, rain can be dreamy and romantic, but a driving sleet with three inches of slush on the sidewalks is just gross. Alaina and Mike were however upbeat and positive, and wanted to soldier on. Alaina even went all the way to MOMA to pick up the bright rainbow striped umbrella featured in many of the photos below. She had spied a similar umbrella in a tourist’s bag on the subway the day before and just had to have it for our shoot given the forecast. Luckily, these two are huge New York Rangers fans, and being season ticket holders they were able to get us access to the ice at Madison Square Garden (which is thankfully inside!) It was amazing to be out on center ice in such a huge empty arena. We even got to wear spikes on our shoes so that we didn’t wipe out on the ice. Fun! After Madison Square Garden we tried shooting in Union Square, a place near and dear to Mike and Alaina, but the weather would just not cooperate, so we put off the rest of the shoot until Saturday morning. Early Saturday, I ventured out to Queens to finish up our session, and as can be seen in many photos below, the weather was perfect! Whew! Plus, going to Queens meant that was had the best photo prop at our disposal, their adorable English bulldog, Rugby!

Thanks for being such great sports Alaina and Mike, see you in July!

Dwayne Crittendon - I freakin’ love these shoots!!!! You guys look awesome!!!

Alaina LeBlanc - What can I say? I am absolutely in love! These pictures capture how happy Mike and I are and that we will persevere in any weather! We truly can’t wait for our wedding day. From NYC to Maine, couldn’t ask for anything more!

Erin and Eric’s Grace Restaurant, Portland, Maine wedding and reception

Erin and Eric’s wedding officially brings the 2012 wedding season to a close, and what a unique season it has been! I’ve shot weddings in five states (Maine, Massachusetts  New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont!), for couples hailing from nine different states. Each wedding has been the culmination of many months of planning, and it was my honor to be invited to each and every one of them. Erin and Eric’s wedding made for a lovely finish to this varied and exciting season. They were wed at Grace Restaurant, a restaurant in the heart of Portland, Maine that has been converted from a former church. I’ve been looking forward to this one for some time! Grace is a favorite dining spot of mine, so when during our initial consult Erin mentioned that they were thinking of having their wedding there I got very excited at the possibilities. It’s an amazing venue, for both a wedding and dinner on the town, and it did not disappoint. The food is excellent too!

Their day may have started with rain, and it may have been cold (it is December after all), but Erin and Eric were surrounded by so many fun friends and family members that I don’t think anyone noticed. It ended up being an absolutely perfect wedding day. The boys started the morning off by hitting up Maine Indoor Karting for a few laps around the track (Eric won!), while the ladies busied themselves with hair, make-up, dress steaming, and last minute alterations! I followed Erin down to her salon and discovered that it happens to be next door to her florist, Compositions. The florists were putting the final touches on the bouquets and arrangements for the wedding, so I was able to stop in an photograph that process.

Erin and Eric made time for a ‘first look’ before the wedding so that we could get the formal photos done beforehand. It’s a good thing too, since the sun sets at 4:30pm this time of year, it was pitch black out when the ceremony ended! The ceremony was held in the lower-level of Grace, and afterwards guests headed upstairs for the rest of the festivities. After their delicious dinner and toasts, a rocking party commenced, I wish I could have kicked off my shoes and joined in!

Thanks again to Erin, Eric and all my clients from this past year all my best in the years to come!
